ABOUT US

In 2001 our founder Margaret Barker volunteered at a community college as a reading tutor. Her student had a high school diploma but could not read. He and Margaret worked together for five years. His experience inspired Margaret to create a much needed community based literacy program: Ethos Literacy.

We started tutoring in 2009. Since then, we have served 1,500 people.

Ethos Literacy was named a Best Practices in Literacy Honoree by the Library of Congress. We won an Innovation Prize from the National Literacy Directory for our New Words project.
